G20 WAIPA Conference on Foreign Direct Investments was held in In Istanbul on April 27, 2015 in collaboration with G20 Turkey, UNCTAD and Invest in Turkey (ISPAT). Global leaders and investment experts discussed new investment strategies that support WAIPA member countries to promote global growth. They also outlined current economic and political issues that affect the flow of global investments. With high level representation from the WAIPA Consultative Committee, the conference took centre stage for leaders and journalists, putting WAIPA on the global map.

Mr. İlker Aycı, President ISPAT and WAIPA said in his opening remarks: "Trying to improve the business side of regulations while taking into account the sensitivity of the national governments of Investment Support Agencies is a balancing act." The conference continued with speeches from Erdal Bahçıvan, Chairman of Istanbul Chamber of Commerce and B20 Turkey Executive Committee Member, Neil Pryor, General Manager of PepsiCo Turkey, Kariom Dahou, Deputy Head of Investments Division at OECD, Dr. Elena Kirtcheva, Secretary General of Vienna Economic Forum and Celestin Monga, Managing Director of UNIDO. HE Ali Babacan, Deputy Prime Minister of Republic of Turkey and Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi, Secretary General of UNCTAD also attended as honorary guests.

Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Ali Babacan during his inaugural speech said, "The development of investment environment is the most cost efficient system in terms of the needs of the business sector and putting them into practice."

With the investment objective of G20 overlapping with WAIPA’s fundamental objective, speakers representing both platforms agreed to make their strategies both collaborative and consultative. The conference discussed the intersection between government and investor priorities in terms of the framework of the markets.

Representing top echelons of government and the corporate sector, the conference enabled a 360 degree representation from countries prioritizing investment and best practices. Discussed here were some of the goals fundamental to all FDI: political and legal predictability; transparency and security of assets. Speakers pointed to the need for recognizing these though policies; strong enforcement and investor-focused protections.

As WAIPA’s role in the international arena grows so does its scope to influence the discourse on Investment. This conference is a testament to the reach of WAIPA in the international ecosystem through meaningful collaborations. WAIPA initiated a cooperation with international organizations and their attendance and remarks were a strong signal to the world of WAIPA’s growing influence. In the end, G20 reaffirmed their belief in the effective improvement and advancement of the WAIPA’s efforts and aspirations.

A detailed report of the event will be shared on the website soon.

Given the success of the G20 WAIPA investment conference, we would like to send out an invitation for our flagship World Investment Conference (WIC) on June 14-16th, 2015 in the spectacular city of Milano, Italy.

In addition to pulling some of the greatest investment celebrities, political leaders, intellectuals and trend-setters alike, WAIPA will discuss some of the most pressing concerns of our IPAs including the effects of multilateral ınvestment agreements in global FDI inflows; the role of FDI in boosting productivity and entrepreneurship in host countries and enhancing the quality of human capital and the relevance of agricultural investments in FDI. Relevant and urgent, the axis of investment promotion remains a nuanced understanding of the current economic scenario. What logic defines investment flows in the recent times and which of our members have done it right despite challenges? These and more topics will weave the discourse at the WIC’15 Milano.

This conference is organized in collaboration with the Italian Trade Agency (ITA). It will be held in Palazzo Lombardia where we will also uphold our tradition of WAIPA Presidential and Regional Directorship elections.

Be sure to check out our social media and register as early as possible on the website www.waipa.org for the event. Program details will also be added shortly.
